VISIT OUR NEW TASTING ROOM IN SARATOGA SPRINGS!
379 Broadway -- (518) 450-1200
Swedish Hill Winery opened a new tasting room in Saratoga Springs, NY in September 2011. The new tasting room features 19 of our excellent Swedish Hill wines, including sparkling and dessert wines. Located in the heart of downtown Saratoga Springs at 379 Broadway, it is nestled in the middle of the downtown shopping and restaurant district. “We have built our customer base from people coming to our tasting room to experience our wines, and this location gives us the opportunity to reach many new people that have never had our wines before,” remarked President and Co-owner David Peterson. “It also brings our wines closer to many that have been to our Finger Lakes tasting room on a previous visit.” Make sure to stop and check out Swedish Hill's newest tasting room on your next visit to Saratoga Springs!
25th Anniversary
1986-2011This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Swedish Hill and it has been a long, but rewarding journey! While the winery wasn't established until 1986, our passion for wine began in 1969, when the Peterson family planted their first vines. Our grapes were originally sold to other wineries within the region, but in 1985, the first grapes
were crushed for Swedish Hill. Dick, a former school Transportation and Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, and Cindy, a former bank Vice President, started the winery while they still held their full-time jobs. Working nights and weekends the first few years with one other part-time employee, the initial production of 1,200 cases in 1985 has grown rapidly to the current production level of more than 70,000 cases. In 1996, Dick and Cindy's son, Dave, joined Swedish Hill after spending seven years as a Viticulture Extension Specialist for Cornell University. Dave has a Ph.D in Viticulture from Penn State University and is currently the Corporate Executive Officer. Recently, Swedish Hill became a "family affair" when Dave's family joined the business. His wife, Jean, joined the team as Director of Operations and handles a variety of administrative issues, as well as cooking for all of Swedish Hill's events. In addition, Dave and Jean's daughter, Amanda Fitzgerald, joined Swedish Hill as Finance Manager. Amanda has a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from St. John Fisher College and previously worked as an Auditor for Birds Eye Foods in Rochester, NY. Amanda has a broad range of experience in agricultural accounting and auditing and assists with cost analysis and all aspects of the business at Swedish Hill. Dave and Jean's son, Kyle, is also a part of the business at Swedish Hill. Kyle is currently working towards his Bachelors degree in Economics from the University of Richmond in Virginia and has worked part time at the winery for years and still does when he is home from school. Now in business for 3 generations, Swedish Hill is proud to produce some of the most award-winning wines in the region. Swedish Hill's most amazing achievements include 3 "Governor's Cups" (The highest award that can be given to a New York State wine) in 1994, 2008 and 2010. Swedish Hill also won "Winery of the Year" in 2008 at the New York Wine & Food Classic Competition and an unbelievable 54 gold medals in 2010.
So far in 2011, gold medals have been rolling in East and West Coast Competitions. The judges at the 2011 New York State Fair awarded a Double Gold to the 2010 Vignoles 25th Anniversary Reserve and a Gold to the 2010 Dry Riesling. The Golden Nose Wine Competition is a sort of People's Choice Awards, and Swedish Hill is clearly a favorite. The 2010 Dry Riesling received a Double Gold medal, and Gold medals went to the 2009 Reserve Chardonnay, Blue Waters Riesling, 2009 Valvin Muscat and Doobie Blues.
At the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in January, we won a gold medal for our Naturel (dry) sparkling wine and gold medals and "Best of Class" honors for our Spumante Blush (semi-sweet) sparkling wine and Valvin Muscat wine (semi-dry).
At the Winemaker's Challenge wine competition at the end of January, we won gold medals for our 2009 Dry Riesling and Blanc de Blanc. And at the Florida State Fair Wine Competition in February, we won gold medals for our 2009 Dry Riesling and Blue Waters Chardonnay.
Back on the west coast we won a gold medal for our 2009 Valvin Muscat at the Monterey Wine Competition in March. In April, we picked up a gold medal for our 2009 Vidal Blanc at the Pacific Rim International Competition. And in May we won gold medals for our 2009 Dry Riesling, 2009 Vidal Blanc, Spumante Blush and Raspberry Infusion.
